Planning Your Trip

Planning Your Trip to Elko

Here are some tips that will help you get the most from your Gathering experience:

Where We Are
Elko, Nevada is located in the northeastern corner of the state along Interstate 80 (Reno to the west is 290 miles, Salt Lake City to the east is 230 miles, Boise is 155 miles northwest). In the high desert of the Great Basin at an elevation of 5060 feet, weather in Elko is varied in January and February. Check the weather before you travel and road conditions if you are driving, and come prepared for cold weather, including snow and ice.

Elko is serviced by SkyWest Airlines (a Delta Connection) from Salt Lake City, Amtrak, and Greyhound Bus Lines. Rental car service in Elko is provided by Enterprise (775-738-2899 or 800-593-0505), Hertz (775-738-3147), and Avis (775-738-4426). Contact El Aero Services for information about chartering a private plane. For the 2018 Gathering, you can catch a special train from northern California! For more information, call the Cowboy Express, 1-800-359-4870 (USA).

How to Get Around Once You're Here
Check out the Map

The major Gathering performance venues are a little more than a mile apart and locations are shown on the Map. The Western Folklife Center provides shuttle transportation on a fixed route on the three busiest days of the Gathering, Wednesday through Saturday; they do not operate Monday-Wednesday. These shuttles are restricted to the performance and workshop venues only. Shuttle vans are not equipped with lifts. Some hotel/motels have shuttle service; be sure to ask when you make your reservation. If you bring your car, parking is free at all venues.

For the Elko Taxi Service, call 738-1400. Carpooling is encouraged.

More FAQs (Answers to Frequently Asked Questions)

Assisted-listening devices are available in the Elko Convention Center Auditorium and the G Three Bar Theater at the Western Folklife Center. Volunteers will be on call to assist wheelchair users and to guide visitors with disabilities so if you need assistance, please call 775-738-7508 to pre-arrange these services.

Elko has many hotels and motels: we recommend you make your reservations well in advance, although rooms usually can be found during the event as well. Links indicate sponsors of the 33rd National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Italics indicate there was a special room rate available to Gathering attendees. We will update this list as the 34th Gathering approaches.

Volunteer opportunities are available all week long during the Gathering, and in the weeks leading up to it. Volunteers can be local or from out of town, and assist with everything, including taking tickets, creating stages, helping guest and artists. Plus, with over 300 valued volunteers keeping the event going, it's a great way to meet your fellow Gathering-goers. If you're interested in getting more involved, please register here and our Volunteer Coordinator will reach out to you in October to match you with a volunteer opportunity.
