If you are wondering what bertsolaritza is and why it is such an important oral tradition in the Basque Country, watch this pilot video for the film Bertsolari by Txintxua Films. You will be amazed at the complexity of this traditional performance art, and at the huge numbers of people who follow the bertsolari and support the competition. We will be presenting bertsolari from the US and the Basque Country at the 2018 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, including one bertsolari - the competition winner in this video -- Maialen Lujanbio Zugasti! This is a cultural experience not to be missed!
Among the Basque traditions that will be presented at the Gathering is bertsolaritza, the improvised poetic art form where two bertsolaris improvise and exchange poetic verses in the Euskara language, while trying to cleverly one-up each other. These verses are sung to melodies and created on the spot in response to a given theme.
